What you'll need to know about travelling from Australia to...

Guidelines for Australians visiting New Zealand

The international border to our Tasman neighbour is finally open, these are the conditions that go hand-in-hand.

  • Travellers have to have been in Australia for at least 14 days
  • Comprehensive contact information must be submitted
  • You won't be allowed to board if you're showing cold or flu symptoms
  • A mask must be worn when onboard the flight
  • The NZ COVID Tracer app must be downloaded by all travellers
  • There may be random temperature checks upon arrival in New Zealand
  • Green zone flight passengers will be separate from other international arrivals at the New Zealand airports
  • Pre-flight testing may be introduced

International restrictions for Australian citizens and permanent residents

Australians are currently banned from travelling anywhere outside of New Zealand due to COVID-19. Australian citizens and permanent residents are only exempt from this rule if:

  • You are a part of a response team for COVID-19, provision of aid included
  • You are travelling for business or for an employer
  • You are travelling for an urgent medical procedure/treatment that is not available in Australia
  • You have a compelling reason for travel longer than three months
  • You are travelling on humanitarian or compassionate grounds
  • You are travelling in the nation's interests

International restrictions for non-citizens and temporary visa holders

Non-citizens and temporary visa holders who wish to return home are encouraged to do so, as long as the borders of their home country are open. Temporary visa holders will need a travel exemption should they want to return to Australia while COVID-19 restrictions are still in place.

Temporary visa holders who are leaving Australia for a short trip overseas are allowed to leave the country at any time. But, keep in mind that it is unlikely you will be able to return to Australia. You will need an inwards exemption prior to your departure and a compelling reason for your travels if you wish to return to Australia.

What transportation options are available from Australia?

If you're looking to leave Australia, your options are limited to flying and cruises.

Flying from Australia

Flights between Australia and New Zealand are more frequent now with the introduction of more services via Qantas, Jetstar and Air New Zealand.

Due to tight restrictions, flying to any other international destination - even if you do qualify to leave the country - offers limited options in terms of finding flights. Commercial return flights are consistently being cancelled so bear this in mind when you're booking.

Bookings to New Zealand can be made via any of the following sites:

Leaving Australia by ship, cruise or ferry

At the moment we are only seeing domestic departures. As the NZ travel bubble is now open, we expect to see those international cruises heading across the Tasman again.

Cruise bookings can be made through any of the following sites:

What happens if I get sick while travelling?

If you become unwell with COVID-19 during your travels, there is a high likelihood you'll have to adhere to that country's policy.

In the event you are in a medical emergency and need hospitalisation, you have the option to contact the Australian Embassy where they will assist you in where to go.

For the arrangement of treatment and payments, you'll need to get in touch with your travel insurance provider.
