Best Rated Ovens Brand: Bosch
Topping the list for cooking performance, Bosch is this year's best rated oven brand, beating brands such as Smeg, Westinghouse and Fisher & Paykel. Bosch also scored well for features and functions and cleaning and maintenance.
We update our data regularly, but information can change between updates. Confirm details with the provider you're interested in before making a decision.
There are a few options you'll need to consider when shopping for an oven:
Wall ovens. Also known as built-in ovens, wall ovens are the most popular choice in Australian homes and can be either gas or electric. Typically 60cm wide, they can be installed under a benchtop or higher up the wall to allow for easier access and don't necessarily need to be placed under the cooktop. To find out more, check out our wall oven buying guide.
Freestanding ovens. Freestanding ovens include both an oven and a cooktop in one appliance. The oven itself can be gas or electric and paired with a gas, electric or induction cooktop. Freestanding ovens are typically cheaper to buy than wall ovens, but there are also large, high-end models available designed for keen home cooks. For more information, check out our freestanding oven buying guide.
Steam ovens. Steam ovens use pressurised steam to cook healthy dishes quickly. They either feature a water reservoir or can be plumbed in and are worth considering if you regularly steam foods. However, they can't produce crispy food like a conventional oven can, and they're also more expensive.
Combination steam ovens. Combi-steam ovens combine a conventional fan-forced oven with a steam-cooking function. This means they offer all the versatility and practicality of a normal oven, with the added benefit of steam-only functions. However, they're much more expensive than traditional ovens.
Electric vs gas
When you're shopping for an oven, one of the main decisions you'll need to make is whether you want to cook with gas or electricity.
Electric ovens are more widely available than gas models and there are plenty of affordable models on the market. They offer a range of cooking functions for optimal results and are more affordable to buy and install than their gas counterparts. They also generally use a drier heat than gas ovens, but some high-end models also feature steam technology to help add moisture to your cooking.
If you have a gas connection, you may decide to choose a gas oven instead. While they're more expensive upfront, gas ovens are cheaper to run than electric ovens and provide instant heat. However, you may need to rotate your food to ensure that it cooks evenly.
How to compare ovens
To find the best oven for your kitchen, make sure you compare ovens across the following categories:
Size
Consider both your cooking needs and the space available in your kitchen when choosing the size of your oven. The most common size is a width of 600mm, with 900mm-wide options also a popular choice for keen home cooks. However, a variety of other widths are also available.
At the same time, don't forget to check out the internal dimensions of the oven. For example, will there be enough space for you to roast two large cuts of meat at the same time?
Price
Prices vary greatly depending on the size and type of oven you choose. A 60cm wall oven starts around the $400 range, while the cheapest 90cm model can be had for around $900. Freestanding ovens start at around $400, while top-of-the-line models can push up towards the $15,000 mark.
Steam ovens and combination ovens also tend to be more expensive than their conventional counterparts.
Self-cleaning
Some ovens have self cleaning functions. For example, pyrolytic ovens have a mode that automatically locks the door and heats up to around 500°C. This turns grease and food spills into ash, which can be easily wiped clean. Another option is catalytic liners, which are used on the walls of an oven to absorb splatters that can then be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
Some ovens also include a steam-cleaning function which allows you to add water to the oven and run a short cooking cycle (usually less than an hour) to create steam. At the end of the cycle, you can then wipe the oven clean.
Appearance
Consider the appearance of the oven and how it will fit with the other appliances and decor in your kitchen. Some freestanding ovens are a design statement all on their own, with models available in retro finishes and a variety of colours.
Make sure to check how easy the exterior is to clean. If you opt for stainless steel, look for a "fingerprint-resistant" finish.
Doors
While oven doors usually open up and down, some models have side-hinged doors. Make sure there will be enough room in your kitchen to open the door or doors without hitting any cabinets.
Check how many layers of glass there are– a door with three layers will be cooler to the touch than a door with two. Also, look for a child lock for added safety.
Cooking functions
Check what sort of cooking functions the oven offers and whether they suit your needs. For example, are there different settings for fan-forced cooking, baking, defrosting, steaming and even cooking different types of food? Is there an integrated grill?
Shelves
Check how many shelves and baking trays come with the oven. How much flexibility is there if you want to move the shelves around? Are the shelves on telescopic runners that make it easier to access your food?
Controls
Check whether all controls are clearly labelled, easy to use and easy to keep clean.
Warranty
Check the manufacturer's warranty to find out how long it lasts and exactly what it covers.
Three things to consider
Double ovens can be useful for large families. If you regularly entertain family and friends or you just love cooking, you might want to invest in a double oven. A double oven is a single appliance but with two separate ovens, allowing you to cook two dishes at the same time but using different temperatures and cooking modes. Of course, that extra cooking space comes at an extra cost, with most priced at $1,000 or more.
Make sure to look inside. If you're shopping in-store, take the time to open up the oven and have a good look inside. This will help you work out how the oven capacity listed on a specs sheet translates into real life – for example, whether your favourite baking trays and dishes will actually fit in the oven, and whether there's enough room to cook a big Christmas dinner for your extended family.
Installation may vary. Finally, don't forget to check what the installation process for your new oven will involve. Requirements vary depending on the type of oven you buy and the connections in place for your previous oven, so check whether you'll need help from a professional tradesperson to get the job done right.

Products marked as 'Promoted' or 'Advertisement' are prominently displayed either as a result of a commercial advertising arrangement or to highlight a particular product, provider or feature. Finder may receive remuneration from the Provider if you click on the related link, purchase or enquire about the product. Finder's decision to show a 'promoted' product is neither a recommendation that the product is appropriate for you nor an indication that the product is the best in its category. Where our site links to particular products or displays 'Go to site' buttons, we may receive a commission, referral fee or payment when you click on those buttons or apply for a product. You can learn more about how we make money here.
When products are grouped in a table or list, the order in which they are initially sorted may be influenced by a range of factors including price, fees and discounts; commercial partnerships; product features; and brand popularity. We provide tools so you can sort and filter these lists to highlight features that matter to you.
We try to take an open and transparent approach and provide a broad-based comparison service. However, you should be aware that while we are an independently owned service, our comparison service does not include all providers or all products available in the market.
Some product issuers may provide products or offer services through multiple brands, associated companies or different labelling arrangements. This can make it difficult for consumers to compare alternatives or identify the companies behind the products. However, we aim to provide information to enable consumers to understand these issues.
Providing or obtaining an estimated insurance quote through us does not guarantee you can get the insurance. Acceptance by insurance companies is based on things like occupation, health and lifestyle. By providing you with the ability to apply for a credit card or loan, we are not guaranteeing that your application will be approved. Your application for credit products is subject to the Provider's terms and conditions as well as their application and lending criteria.
