How do I find the right NBN plan?

Finding the right NBN plan means looking at:

  1. Speed: Is your plan fast enough for your household and online activities?
  2. Price: How much are you willing to pay each month?
  3. Data: Do you actually need unlimited data or can you save some money with a data-capped plan?

We've taken an in-depth look at each category to help you avoid any Internet woes in the future.

Which NBN speed is right for me?

The NBN is divided into six speed tiers. This can make choosing a plan slightly difficult if you aren't familiar with them.

For most Aussies, NBN 12 plans won't be fast enough but NBN 1000 plans will be overkill.

  • Good to know: As per the May 2021 ACCC report and our own Finder data, 50Mbps speeds are the most popular among Internet users. However, the right speed for you will depend on your circumstances.

The below graphic breaks down which NBN speed tier will best suit your household.

Which NBN speed is best for my household?

1-2 users

NBN 25

1-2 people for basic Internet use like browsing and streaming.

2-3 users

NBN 50

2-3 people for regular Internet use like streaming, working from home and gaming.

4+ users

NBN 100

4+ people for heavy Internet use like streaming, working from home, big downloads and more.

group of users

NBN 250

5+ people for heavy Internet use like streaming, working from home, big downloads, gaming and more. Also suitable for small businesses.

You can find out more on NBN speeds here.

  • Tip: If you're looking for a better NBN plan, we recommend running a 30-second Internet speed test to see how your current setup is performing. Compare this speed with the ones above and you'll have a better idea of speeds you should be looking for.

How much should I pay for NBN?

Your monthly cost will depend on what speeds and data limits you're after.

We analysed 302 fixed line NBN plans with unlimited data in our database to find the average price of plans on different speed tiers.

To give you a general idea, you could be paying anywhere between $55 and $112 per month depending on which speed tier your NBN plan is on.

NBN speed tierAverage price per month
NBN 12$55.15
NBN 25$64.73
NBN 50$71.95
NBN 100$89.41
NBN 250$107.79
NBN 1000$112.58

Figures last updated 15 June 2021.

Please note that we've only considered unlimited data plans to make comparison between providers easier for you. Almost all providers are offering unlimited data plans but their data-capped offers can vary greatly.

If the amount you're currently paying is higher than the average for your plan, you should consider comparing your options to find a better NBN deal.

Compare NBN plans now

Can I save with a data-capped plan?

Unlimited data NBN plans might be the norm these days but you can get data-capped deals from 10GB per month all the way up to 500GB and more.

Given the average Aussie uses 258GB of data per month, we've compared NBN 25 plans that come with 200-500GB to their unlimited counterparts to see how much you stand to save.

ProviderData amountData-capped priceUnlimited data priceDifference
SpinTel200GB$49.95/month$59.95/month$10
iPrimus250GB$65/month$70/month$5
Aussie Broadband500GB$65/month$69/month$4

As you can see in the table above, data-capped plans will almost always be cheaper than their unlimited counterparts.

However, the difference is usually quite small. An extra $4 to $10 a month, or up to $120 a year, will ensure you don't have to worry about hitting a data limit (unless you're not a regular Internet user).

The good news is that most NBN providers won't charge you for going over your data limit, and will instead slow down your speed.

  • Tip: We recommend checking your NBN data usage on your past Internet bills to decide which option suits you best.

How do I switch NBN plans?

Switching NBN plans is fairly simple. Here's a breakdown of all the steps you'll need to follow:

  1. Compare NBN plans and find one that matches your needs.
  2. Sign up with your new provider either online or over the phone.
  3. Wait for confirmation from your provider (they'll most likely give you a timeframe).
  4. Find out how long it will take for your modem to be delivered (if you need a new one).
  5. Cancel your old plan and clear up any pending bills.

You can read our guide to switching NBN providers for more details.

What's involved in installing the NBN?

It's easy to have the NBN installed at your home for the first time. All you need is your address to get started.

  1. See if your apartment has the NBN. Use our NBN tracker to get sorted.
  2. If you live in a rental, make sure you have your landlord's permission (in writing) to install the NBN for the first time
  3. Consult with your provider about all the NBN hardware you'll be needing when a technician comes for installation. This will avoid any interruptions in getting your broadband set up and running

Head to our main guide on how to connect to the NBN for more details. We have a specific one for NBN apartment installation too.

Which is the most reliable provider?

Luckily for us, the ACCC carries out audits every three months on who is the fastest and most reliable NBN provider.

It ranks NBN providers by their consistent delivery of advertised maximum speeds. The higher the percentage, the better the provider's ranking.

      Hi Allan,

Thanks for your question. Sorry to hear about your current situation with your NBN provider. While we review NBN in our pages, it’s helpful to know that we neither work with them or answer for their company. It would be best to contact the customer service support of NBN directly for further assistance.

Hope this clarifies and we hope they find a quick resolution for you!

      With care,

      MaySeptember 12, 2017Staff

      Hi Richard,

      Thanks for your question.

Are you pertaining to the ABC iview? If so, the recommended minimum Internet speed by ABC is 1.5Mbps. For best results, iview typically uses the following data speeds:

60-minute program = up to 300MB of data on-demand and 360MB when live streaming
30-minute program = up to 150MB of data on-demand and180MB when live streaming
The 10-minute program = up to 50MB of data on-demand and 60MB when live streaming
5-minute program = up to 25MB of data on-demand and 30MB when live streaming

      Hope this helps.

      Cheers,
      May
