Best hotels in Denarau, Fiji

This small island off the west coast of the mainland is home to some of the largest hotel complexes in Fiji. It also has an immaculate 18-hole golf course and some highly-rated restaurants.

Known as the "flashier" side of the island, you'll find big brand names like The Hilton, Radisson Blu and Sofitel, and Sheraton here.

While most hotels in Denarau come highly rated, the Sheraton's 5-star villas top the lot. It offers infinity pools with views to die for, swim-up bars and family-friendly entertainment.

For families, most resorts in Denarau are child-friendly. However, Radisson Blu takes it up a notch with its choice of five swimming pools, children's water slide, self-catered apartments and a kid's club for when mum and dad need a break.

If you're a loved up couple looking for a quieter getaway, you'll want to check out Sofitel's Resort and Spa. It offers a private, adults-only beach, spa and even an adults-only swimming pool, complete with a handy swim-up bar.

Our top picks for hotels in Denarau: Radisson Blu Resort Fiji, Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa and Sheraton Denarau Villas.

Best hotels in Suva, Fiji

As Fiji's capital city, Suva is home to a mixture of homely bed and breakfasts, corporate hotels and budget accommodation. Some, like the luxury Grand Pacific Hotel, are housed in old colonial buildings that line the main street downtown. Others, located further into the city's suburbs, could be mistaken for a local home.

As a general rule of thumb, the further you're willing to stay from the city centre, the more affordable accommodation becomes. A ten-minute walk from downtown, Victoria Palms Hotel has double rooms from as little as $50 a night.

Suva isn't home to a beach, which is why you'll struggle to find any resorts near the city. Holiday Inn enjoys a palm-fringed swimming pool with pristine lawns in an attempt to create that beach-side resort type feeling.

Our top picks for hotels in Suva: Grand Pacific Hotel, Victoria Palms Hotel and Holiday Inn Suva.

Best hotels in the Coral Coast, Fiji

True to its name, the Coral Coast boasts some of the best scuba and snorkelling off Fiji's mainland.

The road stretching between the towns of Sigatoka and Pacific Harbour is littered with resorts. These cater to a range of budgets and offer prime access to this underwater world.

Great coral doesn't always mean great beaches though, and that's the case along this southern fringe of Fiji. If you're dreaming of sweeping bays and turquoise waters, stay at resorts that have created a man-made beach, like the 5-star resort, Outrigger.

With the area promoting more of a castaway feeling than a busy town, it's worth keeping in mind that you'll probably be eating your meals in-house. So consider resorts like The Warwick whose Sazanami Restaurant has been ranked the best restaurant on the mainland by Tripadvisor users.

Don't be fooled into thinking this coast is all about flashing your cash. Nestled in between the large resorts are a handful of smaller, more affordable resorts. This includes Mango Bay, where rates start from $40 for a dorm room or $85 for a double.

Our top picks for hotels in the Coral Coast: Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort, The Warwick Fiji and Mango Bay Resort Namatakula.

Best hotels in Nadi, Fiji

Home to one of Fiji's two international airports, there's a good chance you'll be flying into Nadi. Despite this global connection,

Nadi is a relatively small town with a downtown centre that can be walked from end-to-end in under ten minutes.

With most visitors to Fiji passing through Nadi, there's enough accommodation to suit everyone's budget and taste. Holidaymakers hoping to revel in luxury can enjoy the 5-star amenities at Pullman's Nadi Bay Resort and Spa while still being just a ten-minute drive from the airport.

For an even easier transfer to the airport, Fiji Gateway Hotel is just around the corner. It offers free airport transfers for all guests.

If you're taking on Fiji alone, then Bamboo Backpackers will put you in a great position to meet like-minded travellers. Its private beach is perfect for soaking up the Fijian sunshine or for attending one of the sociable bonfire parties.

Alternate Fiji accommodation options

Before Fiji's popularity soared, homestays were one of the few accommodation options on its remote islands. Although there are fewer homestays about nowadays you'll still find a number of listings on Airbnb and Stayz. They're normally run by local families and offer complete immersion into traditional Fijian culture and daily life.

As tempting as it is to set up a tent on one of Fiji's stunning beaches, wild camping is frowned upon. If you want to camp, some resorts offer spaces with already-pitched tents.

Alternatively, you can join an organised tour which has permission to camp on remote beaches.
