1Cover Travel Insurance offers unlimited cover for trip cancellation or amendment on its domestic travel policies. Only a handful of other providers, including SCTI, Zoom and FastCover, offer the equivalent.
Enjoy up to $5,000,000 personal liability cover when you choose 1Cover Travel Insurance. Of the 10 brands that we reviewed, this amount was only matched by three other brands.

We found seven insurance providers offering cover for travel expenses related to coronavirus, but 1CoverTravel Insurance wasn't one of them.

1Cover’s premium option for overseas travel that includes unlimited medical expenses, emergency rescue and cancellation. All benefits are available on an annual multi-trip too. A standard policy for overseas travel. Only vital features are included such as medical, cancellation and luggage. You’ll noticed that most benefits have a limited allowance. The maximum age to be eligible for Essentials policy is 74 years old.

- Overseas emergency medical assistance. Includes cover for 24 hour medical emergency assistance such as ambulance cover. 1Cover also offers medical evacuations, funeral arrangements, sending messages to your family and provides for all hospital guarantees.
- Overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses. Provides you with cover for overseas medical treatment if you become ill or injured, including medical, hospital, surgical and nursing, as well as emergency dental treatment to relieve you of sudden and acute pain to your natural teeth.
- Additional accommodation and travel expenses. Pays for any additional travel and accommodation expenses if you are unable to travel and need to reschedule your plans because of illness or injury.
- Family emergencies. Pays your additional travel expenses if your travelling companion or a relative unexpectedly dies or requires hospitalisation because of an injury.
- Emergency companion cover. Covers any additional travel and accommodation expenses if your travelling companion is unable to continue with your planned journey because of an illness or injury.
- Resumption of journey. 1Cover will pay the cost of your airfares when you resume your journey, after having to unexpectedly return home because of the death or hospitalisation of a relative.
- Hospital cash allowance. 1Cover pays an allowance of $50 per day if you are in hospital for more than 48 hours while travelling internationally.
- Permanent disability. If you become permanently disabled as the result of an injury during your journey, or within 12 months, 1Cover will pay you a benefit amount. Permanent disablement is defined by 1Cover as the total loss of sight in one or both eyes, or the loss of the use of a hand or a foot.
- Loss of income. If you become disabled within 30 days of an injury caused during your international travel and you are still unable to work after more than 30 days of your return to Australia, 1Cover will pay a weekly benefit to cover your loss of income.
- Luggage and personal effects. This feature pays the replacement cost for luggage or personal items which are stolen or damaged, including luggage, spectacles, personal effects, personal computers and cameras.
- Luggage and personal effects delay expenses. The cover benefit pays for you to purchase essential items of clothing and other personal effects if your luggage is delayed, misdirected or misplaced by your airline or travel carrier for more than 12 hours.
- Cancellation fees and lost deposits. Provides cover for any cancellation fees you have to pay or any deposits you lose as the result of circumstances outside of your control disrupting your travel, such as illness, injury, strikes, collisions, retrenchment or natural disasters.
- Credit card fraud and replacement. 1Cover will cover the cost of replacing your credit cards if they are lost or stolen and reimburse you for any loss as the result of fraudulent use of your card.
- Disruption of your journey. If your journey is delayed for more than six hours because of circumstances outside of your control, 1Cover will pay for any additional meal and accommodation expenses.
- Alternative transport expenses. If you are travelling to a wedding, funeral, conference, sporting event or using prepaid travel or tour arrangements and you experience delays, 1Cover will pay any additional travel expenses to get you to your destination.
- Personal liability cover. Includes cover for legal expenses for bodily injuries or damage to another’s property as a result of a claim against you.
- Domestic pets. If you are delayed on your return home, 1Cover will pay any additional boarding expenses for the boarding kennel or cattery where your pet is housed and any veterinary fees your pet incurs while you are travelling are also covered.
- Domestic services. 1Cover will provide a benefit for housekeeping services if you suffer and injury or disablement during your travel which continues on your return.
  Rental vehicle excess. 1Cover will pay the excess on your rental vehicle if it is stolen, crashed or damaged in any way.

Are there any additional options?

1Cover offers 5 different add-on packs to give your travel insurance policy more flexibility. Not all plans are eligible to add on these packs.

Cruise pack. Get cover for your trip along the seas. This pack includes cruise specific cover for things like missed port connections and cancelled prepaid shore excursions.
Winter sports pack. A must if your paid to your n trip involves things like skiing or snowboarding. Get cover for unexpected accidents on the slopes and if you need emergency evacuation. This is only available for those 64 years and under.
Choose your excess. All policies have a standard $200 excess which will be an out-of-pocket expense if you need to make a claim. This excess can be reduced to $100 buy paying extra on your policy.
Increase your rental vehicle excess cover. If your policy includes rental car excess cover, you can increase the cover amount for a bit more money.
Cover for high value items. If you’re travelling with expensive gear, it could be a good idea to take out extra cover in case your item is lost, stolen or damaged.

What exclusions apply to 1Cover travel insurance?

1Cover Travel Insurance has some general exclusions listed in the product disclosure statement that you should be clear on. This includes:

If the policyholder does not take care to act responsibly to protect themselves and their property and to avoid making a claim.
If the policyholder does not do everything in their power to avoid a loss.
If the policyholder makes any claims arising from illegal behaviour.

Policyholder was aware of something that would result in a claim being made at time of application
Claim is for a loss that can be recovered by other types of compensation
Claim arises from errors made in bookings or the policyholder's failure to obtain appropriate travel documentation
Claims arising for loss of property that has been confiscated or detained by government authorities
Claims arising from motorcycle accidents where the policyholder does not hold an Australian motorcycle license or if the policyholder is a passenger on a motorcycle that has been involved in an accident where the driver did not have an Australian drivers licence
Claim arising from pre-existing medical conditions not listed in the product disclosure statement
Claim arising from the taking of blood-thinning medication
Claim made for travel that was not recommended by medical practitioner
Claim arising from pregnancy, childbirth or related complications
Claim arising for treatment in hospital for addiction to drugs or alcohol
Claim for cost of medication in use prior to departure
Claims arising from mental illness, stress and depression
Claims for sexually transmitted diseases
Claims arising where alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor

Like most insurers, you will usually need to disclose any pre-existing medical conditions when you apply for cover. However, 1Cover have 35 pre-existing conditions which they automatically cover. Under certain conditions, this can include diabetes, epilepsy, pernicious anaemia and asthma. Be sure to read their product disclosure statement before deciding whether or not you need to disclose information for pre-existing medical conditions.
For many pre-existing conditions such as a heart condition, the following rules generally apply:
- You can get travel cover but will need to pay an additional premium if you want the condition covered.
- You can get travel cover but it will be mandatory to purchase cover for that specific condition.
- You can get travel insurance but your condition won’t be covered.
- In rare cases, 1Cover will not cover you at all.
1Cover cruise travel insurance is available when you buy any 1Cover travel insurance plan, except Essentials and Medical Only plans. When you purchase cruise cover as an add on, you’ll have to pay an additional premium and get cover for services like:
- Cabin confinement
- Prepaid shore excursions cancellation
- Missed cruise departure
- Missed port cover
- Formal attire cover
- Formal attire delay allowance

What are the dollar limits on luggage lost by airlines?

Hi Chris,

Thanks for getting in touch! International cover for luggage and personal effects is $5,000 at the time of writing, with a $100 excess. However, this is for multi trip insurance only.

As it says on ther website, “when we receive a personal belongings claim, you have to provide proof of ownership for the lost or stolen items. We realise that policy holders cannot always provide receipts for each and every item, but you’ll still have to provide evidence of ownership. We can accept photographic evidence, warranty cards, manuals, receipts, bank or credit card statements as proof of ownership.”
